Because of its high quantum yield and its wide spread in nature, the luciferin/luciferase system has been target of investigations for a long time. Nevertheless there are some fundamental mechanistic problems. In the previous work we show the synthesis of some luciferin and oxyluciferine derivates. With the help of these derivates we try to explain how different colours of luciferin-emission are produced. Furthermore these substances are useful molecules for ground state investigations on mechanistic aspects of light emission. The light emission of luciferine in DMSO/t-BuOK is well known, but not well understood. We can show that, in the presence of hydrogenperoxide, luciferine-derivates also produces light in other solvents and under different conditions. This supports the hypothesis that, bioluminescence has envolved primarily as an oxygen detoxifying process.
