Welcome
to the UCSB website of the Marine Primary Production Group (MPPG).
MPPG dates back to 1979. Dozens of MS/PhD graduate students, more than
a hundred undergraduate researchers, and a number of distinguished visiting
scientists have been participants. The MPPG website introduces you to
who we are today, tutorials on our current and past research and highlights
of past accomplishments. It is largely a public archive of MPPG publications,
presentations and technical reports, with dynamic links to course materials
as well as to organizations and individuals with whom we are collaborating.
It is also intended to be a scrapbook that keeps past, present,
and future MPPG participants connected. As such, the MPPG website will
always be under construction.

Research has always been conducted in the area of phytoplankton
ecology. The approach has been quantitative, mechanistic and architectural,
with ongoing studies iterating back and forth from laboratory and diverse
natural ecosystems. The aim is to understand and model the fundamental
mechanisms by which light drives the in situ dynamics of phytoplankton
cell biology, adaptive physiology, primary production and responses
to ecosystem change.
At present (2004), we are especially active in research on UV photoecology,
harmful algal blooms, and the physical driving forces determining phytoplankton
community composition in coastal waters.
