Having been born
and raised in Brooklyn, NY it was hard for many to understand my passion
to become a marine biologist let alone move to California. It was my
passion to become a marine biologist that brought me to Santa Barbara
to pursue my bachelors of science in aquatic biology at the University
of California, Santa Barbara. While attending UCSB I became interested
in how my sailing and SCUBA abilities could aid in my interest to become
more involved in the marine research labs on campus. My first job as
a lab assistant involved SCUBA diving for crabs off of the oil rigs
along the Channel Islands. Having become more knowledgable about the
Channel Islands and its abundance of rare and extraordinary species
and ecosystems I became involved in a population genetics lab researching
rockfish, and finally in the Prézelin lab where I became more
familiar with marine phytoplankton and the toxic blooms that present
threats to these species and ecosytems. After graduating in March 2004,
having completed my senior honors thesis on toxic diatoms, genus Pseudo-nitszchia,
I became more knowledgeable and experienced in the research of harmful
algae blooms, and was offered to continue research for the HAB-trac
project at UCSB. I look forward to learning even more from my fellow
colleagues involved in the HAB-trac project at UCSC, UCSB, and UCSD,
and hope for many more great research experiences in the future.
