Terrestrial Plant and Ecosystem Ecology
at the University of California, Santa Barbara

The University of California at Santa Barbara presents outstanding opportunities for graduate students interested in pursuing degrees in plant and ecosystem ecology. We are an interactive group spanning four campus departments: Ecology, Evolution, and Marine Biology (EEMB), Geography, Environmental Studies (ES), and the Bren School for Environmental Science and Management. In addition, the group is nested within the outstanding ecological science community at UCSB. Our expertise ranges from evolutionary ecology in plant populations to remote sensing of entire ecosystems. The Santa Barbara area and UC Natural Reserve System provide exceptional field sites in habitats ranging from grassland, sage scrub, chaparral, and oak woodland. Desert and alpine systems occur within half a day's drive. Santa Barbara is also home to the National Center for Ecological Analysis and Synthesis (NCEAS), the only NSF center devoted to ecology.
