James Cooper Associate Professor, MCDB |
|
Dr. Cooper received his B.S. in Biology in 1977 from Lebanon Valley College, and his Ph.D. in Plant Biology from Washington University in 1982 where he studied the structure and biosynthesis of hydroxyproline-rich cell wall proteins in plants. He continued his research on plant extracellular matrix molecules as a Postdoctoral Fellow both at Washington University and at the ARCO Plant Cell Research Institute. From 1986 to 1988 he was a Research Associate in the Department of Biological Sciences at Stanford University where he developed his interest in plant-microbe symbiosis. Dr. Cooper joined the UCSB faculty in 1988 and has been a recipient of the UC Regents' Junior Faculty Fellowship and a Presidential Young Investigator Award from the National Science Foundation. He served as Associate Director and Director of the Interdepartmental Biomolecular Science and Engineering Program from 1996-2000 and as Associate Dean of Mathematical, Life and Physical Sciences from 2000-2006.
