Peggy Cotter Associate Professor, MCDB |
|
Dr. Cotter earned a B.A. degree in Microbiology and Psychobiology from UCLA in 1980. After working as a Clinical Medical Laboratory Technologist for several years she returned to the department of Microbiology and Molecular Genetics at UCLA to earn her Ph.D. in 1992. Dr. Cotter's thesis research was focused on understanding the regulation of electron transport pathway operons in Escherichia coli. As an NIH post-doctoral fellow in the department of Microbiology and Immunology in the UCLA School of Medicine, Dr. Cotter applied her background in bacterial physiology and genetics to investigate the role of virulence gene regulation, and of regulated factors, in bacterial pathogenesis. Dr. Cotter was an Adjunct Assistant Professor in the department of Microbiology, Immunology and Molecular Genetics at UCLA before joining the MCDB faculty in 2001 where she continues to study the molecular bases of Bordetella pathogenesis. Dr. Cotter is also a member of the Biomolecular Sciences and Engineering Program, she is Project Leader of the Burkholderia Project within the Pacific Southwest Regional Center of Excellence for Biodefense and Emerging Infectious Diseases Research (PSWRCE), and she is an Editor for the journal Molecular Microbiology.
