Bio Dr. Mahan received his B.S. degree in Biochemistry (1978) and an M.S. degree in Genetics (1982) at the University of California, Davis, and a Ph.D. in Genetics (1988) at the University of Utah. As an NIH post-doctoral fellow at Harvard Medical School (1989-1993), his research interest was in microbial pathogenesis and vaccine development, and has continued this area of research since joining the UCSB faculty in 1993. Dr. Mahan shared the AAAS Newcomb-Cleveland Prize (1994) for the outstanding paper published in Science. Additionally, he has received an American Cancer Society Junior Faculty Research Award (1995); a Beckman Young Investigator Award (1995); the Harold J. Plous Award (1998) for the top Assistant Professor in the College of Letters and Science (UCSB); and the Mathers Foundation Senior Research Scholar Award (2004). Dr. Mahan was Co-founder and Director of Remedyne Corporation (1999-2003), a biotech company in Santa Barbara, California, focused on developing vaccines and antimicrobials; and served on the Editorial Board for the Journal of Molecular Medicine (2001-2004).
