Area of Research

Jaws from the marine polychaete Nereis sp. have mechanical properties that are comparable to human dentin and which surpass values attainable by synthetic polymers. These properties can be attributed to a small amount of non-mineral zinc incorporated into a protein matrix. My primary interest is in characterizing these proteins with respect to their composition, structure, and interaction with zinc.
