Area of Research

The mussel byssal thread coating protects a substrate that undergoes severe strain with complete recovery; a desired combination of properties in engineered coatings. I am currently characterizing the material properties of the coating with special emphasis on the structural reorganization accommodating the large strains. Future investigations will focus on elucidating the coat composition contributing to its unique mechanical behavior.
