Area of Research

The jaws of several marine organisms exhibit unique mechanical properties given their absence of minerals. We investigate the relations between the biochemistry, the structure, and the mechanical properties of such a system, the beaks of squids, with emphasis towards linking the abrasion resistance with the composition and the ultrastructure. The long-term goal is to mimic these links to design novel light materials with tailored wear resistance.
