Topographical view of the preCOLS in the subsurface proximal portion of a M galloprovincialis byssal thread. Because of the high degree of lateral register in the preCOLs, we refer to this structure as a frozen or locked smectic mesophase, the latter being quite common in liquid crystalline assemblies.
