Senior Honors Program in Biology
Senior Honors Program in BiologyThe Senior Honors Program is a departmental honors program designed to provide students with the opportunity to conduct an original independent research project. This program is especially recommended for students planning to pursue a career in scientific research. Students in this program will be expected to devote much of their junior and senior year to the design and completion of the project. Students are encouraged to apply for various undergraduate fellowships through the UCSB Office of Undergraduate Research and Creative Activities (URCA) to help defray the expenses of their projects. To be considered for the Senior Honors Program, students must have the support of an EEMB faculty member or an MCDB faculty member , be eligible to enroll in independent studies' courses (MCDB 199, EEMB 199-see the UCSB General Catalog), must have completed at least 105 total units toward graduation, and have a minimum grade point average of 3.0 or better in the major. Applications are available in the Undergraduate Advising Office at the beginning of fall quarter and are typically due early in the senior year. Once a student's application has been approved, he or she will be given a special library card with privileges equivalent to those given to graduate students. During the spring quarter of the student's senior year, faculty sponsors will be asked to evaluate each student's progress and to recommend those students whose work deserves the recognition of Distinction in the Major. Students completing the program successfully will have the award "with distinction in the major" listed in the commencement brochure and will have it so noted on their official transcripts and diploma.
