City of Santa Barbara Parks Division

Parks Assistant

The City of Santa Barbara Parks Division is recruiting an hourly Parks 
Assistant for restoration and preservation of parks open space native 
habitats. This is a part-time hourly position for 5-8 hours/week, 
$12.50/hour, with no benefits. Duties include: assisting staff with 
restoration plan design and layout; assisting staff and volunteers with 
native planting, control of exotic species, watering and weeding at 
Douglas Family Preserve restoration sites; and monitoring restoration 
sites to ensure that native plants are healthy and restoration sites are 
clean and free of weeds.

Start Date: 10/13/08 and End Date: 1/16/08. This is a part-time, three 
month position with the potential to be renewed an additional three months.
Qualifications: Ability to follow verbal and written instructions and 
work independently and under general supervision in both field and 
office. A background in habitat restoration, horticulture, ecology, 
botany or related courses and/or work experience is highly desirable. 
Experience with California native plant identification is preferable but 
not required. Valid California driver's license required.

Ability to: Learn to care for and maintain a variety of plant life. 
Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing. Provide 
own transportation to Douglas Family Preserve, or selected Park, and to 
occasionally meet with staff at City of Santa Barbara offices downtown. 
Be professional, reliable, and punctual. Meet schedules and timelines. 
Be flexible and effective. Be able to work independently. Provide 
accurate, complete information and record keeping. Make sound decisions, 
exercise good judgment and effectively resolve problems. Use proper 
safety when handling equipment and working at Park. Adhere to City 
policies and procedures. Maintain good health and physical condition 
appropriate to the performance of assigned duties and responsibilities 
which may include the following: walk, stand, or sit for extended 
periods of time; and work outdoors in a landscaping environment (weed, 
mulch, prune, and water plants).
Environmental Conditions: Working in the field, but also includes an 
office environment.

Physical Conditions: Essential and marginal functions [may] require 
maintaining physical condition necessary for sitting, standing, and 
walking for prolonged periods of time. In some cases, setting up 
equipment and bending and lifting and carrying objects.
